Description:
Together we designed the interior of het Duivelsteen, a medieval castle in Ghent, Belgium. Currently vacant, it awaits conversion into the home of BROEI, a platform for youth organisations. The main concept of the design is based on a public-to-private gradient, which includes soft barriers between the public programme and the four more private workshop spaces. Another prominent design principle is working with standard factory sizes of material. These sizes influence the architecture & grid used for architectural elements such as the folding polycarbonate walls and the wooden cabinet system. Rooms are enclosed by either introverted plinths (on the ground floor by a roof plinth and on the first floor by a floor plinth) or by extraverted plinths (Bar BROEI + BROEI Kitchen).
