Description:
The design of De Hoogte library balances innovation with sensitivity, responding to what exists today while adapting to the evolving future of public libraries. The transformation of De Hoogte library adapts a former school building through strategic intervention and careful restoration. The design preserves the original classrooms while removing cluttered additions, restoring vital connections between interior spaces and their surroundings. Generous public rooms enhance the building's civic presence without compromising its historical character. The intervention revitalizes the former classrooms' inherent qualities, establishes a new street presence, and reimagines the courtyard as a central organizing element. New additions complement the existing scale while introducing spaces that support contemporary library functions. By decluttering the building's center and reconnecting spaces with the courtyard, each room can function independently, accommodating diverse programs and users while maintaining spatial flexibility and flow.
