Description:
This project chooses to enter the dazzling and powerful Ichnographia by picking out micro compositions labelled as sepulchrum or similar. The research came into force through a didactic manner of categorising these tombs on their scale and complexity (the number of elements or articulations), primarily focussing on the two-dimensionality of the plane. Although subordinate to the first attention, the plan appears to be repleted with these microstructures that play a significant role in establishing the grammar for Piranesi’s architectural language. It can be concluded that the more complex the composition, the more the grammar of this architectural language becomes a syntax. Whilst the tiniest structures transform from one to the other, more complex structures entail a relationship between rules in which it is more difficult to distinguish the sequence of steps to form the overall composition. The project is an experiment to make these operations explicit and experience the limits of the self-defined rules.
