Description:
Threshing, retting, hackling — terms mostly forgotten in Zeelandic Flanders, similarly as the flax cultivation and linen production related to them, as the number of flax fields has been decreasing despite its strong historical precedent. The building takes advantage of the vastness of agricultural land and establishes a new productive landscape, promotes shared machinery, labor, workshops, research and storage that reduce barriers for beginning farmers. The proposal began with the landscape, which is experienced as utterly horizontal, yet dynamic — rising and falling as flax is grown and harvested. The architecture responds to this movement, establishing its own elevated horizon that is concealed and revealed as the flax rises and falls around it.
