Description:
The dark is something most of us used to fear when we were younger, it deprives us of our sight, obscures our surroundings and compels us to rely on our other senses. When we are in the dark we start to question the space around us, we tumble, touch and squint our eyes to find our way. However, darkness also holds something more primitive. Our ancestors sought shelter in the caverns and caves of the world, bringing fire and warmth from outside to turn the dark into a refugee. The project explores the atmospheric qualities of darkness. Studies with watercolour, photography and model-making lead to the design of a sheltered tearoom along a hiking track between Edale and Castleton in the Peak District, United Kingdom.
