Description:
Shrinking glaciers, melting permafrost and heavier rainfall trigger frequent rockfalls and flash floods. The mountains are fragile. This project reframes erosion not only as a threat, but as an opportunity for a design where the temporality of material communicates the mountain’s fragility. Architecture is sediment. Set at the Zugspitze, Germany’s highest and most visited mountain, the project proposes a network of small-scale interventions that intercept and reuse the mountain’s "waste” material flow. Driftwood, bedload rock and dismantled ski-lifts are turned into a growing structure in the valley. The school for sculpting that arises, stores, utilises and reveals the ongoing abrasion of the mountain.
