Description:
Terrabond Company is a project based around the development of bio-reigonal construction in the Netherlands. This design followed a research into bio-based materials which are already available and what could be developed over time in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Reigon. The development of a bio-based material production centred around timber and fast growing materials such as hemp and typha has the potential to mitigate some of the most severe environmental issues in the Netherlands, including subsidence, nitrogen pollution and biodiversity loss. The design which followed this research was based on a development timeline of three phases - 5 years, 25 years and 50 years. Each of these phases has a different material availability which informs the structural and design principles. The functionality of the building also adapts through time. It starts with adapting an existing warehouse into a factory for prefabricated wall and floor elements as well as a bio-based education centre. Apartments with flexible layouts are added in the next two phases allowing the building to cater to a diverse set of needs.
