Description:
The neighbourhoods of Hoboken and Kiel in southern Antwerp form a layered urban landscape where histories of industry, migration, and social housing intersect. Within this context, the Blikfabriek, a former factory turned cultural hub, reveals how inclusivity can be both spatially practiced and contested. The research employs ethnographic mapping, participatory observation, and narrative workshops to analyse how risk operates spatially, as surveillance, uncertainty, and negotiation of belonging. The thesis reimagines the factory as a youth center where safety emerges through layered thresholds, adaptable uses, and cultural resonance, reframing risk as a catalyst for agency, appropriation, and shared authorship of space.
