My graduation project, Active Ageing in Tarwewijk, investigates how architectural design can enable older adults to live independently, safely, and with dignity within existing housing. Located in Rotterdam’s Tarwewijk, it transforms structurally sound Haagse portiekflats through minimal, strategic interventions such as step-free access, lift cores, flexible layouts, and shared community spaces. The project challenges institutional care models by embedding community-based support within the neighborhood, addressing rising care demands and workforce shortages. Beyond technical retrofitting, it reflects on ageing with autonomy and explores how inclusive design can strengthen resilience, social connection, and a sense of belonging for present and future communities.
